The Emory University Libraries invites applications for a Social Sciences Librarian to deliver a full range of library services with a focus on serving Emory’s African American Studies Department. African American Studies is a vibrant interdisciplinary department involving approximately thirty faculty members. The department explores the experiences of people of African descent in the United States and the Diaspora through significant and growing faculty strength in History, English, Sociology, Religion, Anthropology, Political Science and the Arts. Responsibilities: The librarian provides outreach and a full range of library services to the African American Studies Department. As a member of the social sciences team, s/he will be equally responsible for outreach and support to/for various social science departments, as needed, and will report to the social sciences team leader. The librarian develops, manages, promotes, and facilitates access to collections to support relevant programs and courses, provides classroom instruction in the use of library resources, and provides general and consultative reference services. S/he creates subject specific content for the library's web site and employs new technologies in instructional sessions. In providing services and developing collections, the librarian collaborates with other liaisons to meet interdisciplinary needs. The librarian represents the Library in national and regional organizations and in outreach activities.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in library/information science and demonstrated subject expertise in the social sciences, preferably in African-American Studies. Experience in collection management and knowledge of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing. Experience in meeting the reference and research needs of students and faculty in the social sciences. Experience in designing and delivering discipline-specific library instruction sessions. Excellent communication skills and ability to contribute successfully in a team environment, collaborate with colleagues across the library and the university, and manage multiple responsibilities. Record of involvement in professional activities.
