BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to work well with children and adults

Ability to work with computer cataloging and circulation
Ability to follow written and oral instructions
Competency in word processing and office software
SUPERVISOR: Director
DUTIES
Supervise and assist all branch managers along with YA and Adult
Services Librarian
Schedule branch visits
Take new books, requests and requested books, returned books, mended
books, supplies, display items and other library materials
Plan, develop and execute children's programs
Supply storyhour materials to all branches
Plan and implement Summer Reading Program. Implement or oversee
storyhours and special activities
Plan and direct the organization of Children's displays, exhibits,
and programs for all branches (posters, signs, bookmarks, door prizes,
etc.)
Write press releases including newspaper articles and radio spots
detailing programs, exhibits, displays and activities for all branches
Work as liaison between library and schools
Develop and maintain film programs for local day care centers,
nursery schools, and Headstart centers
Attend professional workshops, conferences and seminars for the
purpose of continuing education
Responsible for children's collection by selecting books via reviews,
sales representatives and publishers catalogs, and replacement buying.
Monitor weeded children's selections sent in from branches
Revise processed juvenile books, videos and audios
Assist in any branch operation when needed
Assist in the planning and implementation of new services
Update various lists and holdings – yearly (pamphlet file, magazine
list, Newbery and Caldecott lists, videocassette listing,
audiocassette listing, primer list)
Responsible for notifying Director of conditions affecting the
appearance or safety of any branch
Gives suggestions for improvements of any branch's operation
May conduct tours of library branches
Represent library to various organizations in parish
Read professional literature
Follow policies and procedures in the library policy manual and
personnel handbook
Responsible for maintaining the library's storytelling collection of
puppets, Board stories, etc.
Perform other library related duties assigned by Director
Salary will be determined by the qualifications.

Position Description: To provide library services and programming for
youth. Plans, coordinates and schedules children's programming and
prepares publicity releases. Assists children and parents with
references questions and performs reader's advisory service. Works
closely with the Managers and meets regularly with other Children's
Librarians to coordinate programs system-wide. Other duties as assigned.
Location: Garland, Texas (Dallas area)

Salary Comment: $39,270.40 to $51,064.00 DOQ
Education: Requires a Master of Library Science Degree from an
institution accredited by the American Library Association, with
coursework emphasis on children's literature and programming. No
experience required. Experience in planning and presenting children's
programs strongly preferred.
Experience: Knowledge of public library children's programming,
services and collection development. Ability to read orally, write
legibly, plan and organize program materials; select and evaluate
books and materials for use; and research topics. Skill to operate a
personal computer, access an on-line data base, express self through
writing and/or orally.
