Cataloger, Reference Librarian

As a graduate of the UNCG Library and Information Studies Program (class of 2003), I always enjoy having the opportunity to reach out to my alma mater with possible job opportunities for fellow librarians! As I’m sure you are aware, BAE Systems successfully recruited a number of librarians from the 2003 and 2004 graduating class, myself included, who were put in for clearances with the Federal Government and are now working in many exciting positions throughout the Washington, DC metro area!

We have another exciting opportunity with the Federal Government for which we will be able to sponsor a few candidates (of all experience levels) for clearances and place them in positions here in the DC metro area, and some possible opportunities in St. Louis, MO. These positions have a geospatial focus, and are cataloging and reference positions. I have included job descriptions below.

If you have any interested candidates, please have them send their resumes to Ellen Bernard (Ellen.Bernard@baesystems.com) and/or Jessica Gilchrist (Jessica.Gilchrist@baesystems.com). If we are able to identify enough candidates, I hope to schedule a time in early December to come down and provide an informal informational session and conduct interviews. Please let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, we hope to hear back from you soon!

Here is a basic job description for the cataloging positions:

The map cataloger is responsible for processing intelligence and open source products for storage and distribution. With minimum assistance, the cataloger should be able to analyze, catalog, update, review, modify and purge cartographic materials in print and electronic format; capture pertinent metadata for descriptive/subject cataloging into the ILS database using modified MARC 21 and AARC2 standards; and accurately create bibliographic, holding and item records.

Demonstrated knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards including AACR2R, LC classification schedules, LCSH, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and MARC formats. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with OCLC Connexion, Voyager or other automated library systems, and Microsoft Office software. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, and exercise initiative. Prefer knowledge of one or more foreign languages. Strong customer-service orientation. Aptitude for complex and detailed work demonstrated. Current awareness of national trends and developments in cataloging, metadata standards, and information retrieval is required. Must be able to set priorities, multi-task, be self directed and motivated, and adapt to ever-changing needs.

And a job description for the reference positions:

The Geospatial Research Analyst performs reference interviews to determine customer cartographic needs. He/she works with government and commercial partners to acquire maps and charts. The map researcher works with catalogers and others to determine appropriate indexing and shelving methods. He/she shares responsibility for filing, maintaining, and ensuring access to more than one million cartographic materials in accordance with government standards and guidelines.

Additional responsibilities include identifying resources for cartographic materials, and networking with other government agencies for collection development; and utilizing GIS and geospatial software tools to assist customers with requests; maintaining the map library collection; shelving of library materials; and indexing for easier customer access. The Research Analyst trains customers on techniques for searching and ordering cartographic materials through the internal product request database.

Cataloguing Librarian & Bibliographic Control Services (two positions)Division

Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for two permanent
tenure-track positions in the University Library System.

Cataloguing Librarian (two positions)
Bibliographic Control Services Division
Queen Elizabeth II Library

The people we want to hire:

Memorial University is seeking two creative and collegial librarians with
an interest in cataloguing and metadata work to share in shaping the
future of resource discovery and access—individuals with a broad knowledge
base and a grounding in current cataloguing and metadata standards and
with an enthusiasm for exploring alternative and complementary modes of
access to library resources.

The successful candidates will have a degree from an ALA accredited
graduate program. They will have effective interpersonal and writing
skills, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, will learn
quickly and continuously, and will excel both independently and
collaboratively. Familiarity with the current state of information
technology and a commitment to keep abreast of its evolution are also
needed, along with the ability to develop new solutions using technology.
Teaching of new skills to coworkers will be expected and supported.
Cataloguing experience in an academic or research library environment and
experience with an online authority system are highly desirable but not
essential. Knowledge of a second language, preferably Western European,
is also desirable.

What the librarians’ responsibilities will be:

As part of a collegial group of librarians in the Bibliographic Control
Services Division, the successful candidates will perform original
cataloguing in a range of formats and subject areas, will create records
for NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Project), and may participate in non-
MARC metadata projects. Standards include Library of Congress, National
Library of Medicine, MARC, Dublin Core and other metadata standards as
appropriate. Materials for resource description cover a range of
published and unpublished works, including electronic resources, documents
and technical reports, scores and sound recordings, audio-visual
materials, maps, rare books and academic theses. These materials may be
part of specialized collections such as marine studies, or medicine and
health; they may be unique titles for a comprehensive collection relating
to Newfoundland and Labrador; or they may be digitized resources for
Memorial's Digital Archives Initiative collections.

Cataloguing librarians carry out focused responsibilities for aspects of
the Division’s workflow, for special cataloguing, metadata or acquisitions
projects, and/or for liaison with other library units or branches. The
librarians collaborate in establishing policies, priorities and
procedures, and in teaching colleagues. They are expected to carry out
research and scholarship, and to serve the library and University through
work on committees. In addition, the successful candidates may have an
opportunity to participate in collection development activities.

Who we are:

The Bibliographic Control Services Division is located in the Queen
Elizabeth II Library, the central library in Memorial's system. The
Division, with a staff of seven librarians and thirty-three library
assistants, is the largest of the technical services units in the library
system and is responsible for acquisition and cataloguing of resources in
all formats, as well as for digital library metadata. Memorial's
librarians strive to be forward-looking and dedicated professionals,
committed to high standards of resource access and public service. Our
mission is to support the University’s research agenda and student success
at all levels. The Memorial University Library is a SirsiDynix site and
uses CONTENTdm to manage the University’s digital collections.

learning. St. John's is a very safe, friendly, thriving capital city with
great historic charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide
range of outdoor activities.

Benefits of employment at Memorial:

This is a permanent tenure-track appointment. An appointment at the rank
of Librarian I or Librarian II is anticipated. Salary floors are $44,712
and $51,428 respectively as of September 1, 2008. Actual salary will
recognize experience and qualifications. Memorial offers standard
academic benefits including provision of time for research and
professional development. Further details on the terms of employment may
