Cataloger, Reference Librarian

As a graduate of the UNCG Library and Information Studies Program (class of 2003), I always enjoy having the opportunity to reach out to my alma mater with possible job opportunities for fellow librarians! As I’m sure you are aware, BAE Systems successfully recruited a number of librarians from the 2003 and 2004 graduating class, myself included, who were put in for clearances with the Federal Government and are now working in many exciting positions throughout the Washington, DC metro area!

We have another exciting opportunity with the Federal Government for which we will be able to sponsor a few candidates (of all experience levels) for clearances and place them in positions here in the DC metro area, and some possible opportunities in St. Louis, MO. These positions have a geospatial focus, and are cataloging and reference positions. I have included job descriptions below.

If you have any interested candidates, please have them send their resumes to Ellen Bernard (Ellen.Bernard@baesystems.com) and/or Jessica Gilchrist (Jessica.Gilchrist@baesystems.com). If we are able to identify enough candidates, I hope to schedule a time in early December to come down and provide an informal informational session and conduct interviews. Please let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, we hope to hear back from you soon!

Here is a basic job description for the cataloging positions:

The map cataloger is responsible for processing intelligence and open source products for storage and distribution. With minimum assistance, the cataloger should be able to analyze, catalog, update, review, modify and purge cartographic materials in print and electronic format; capture pertinent metadata for descriptive/subject cataloging into the ILS database using modified MARC 21 and AARC2 standards; and accurately create bibliographic, holding and item records.

Demonstrated knowledge of current cataloging rules and standards including AACR2R, LC classification schedules, LCSH, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and MARC formats. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with OCLC Connexion, Voyager or other automated library systems, and Microsoft Office software. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, and exercise initiative. Prefer knowledge of one or more foreign languages. Strong customer-service orientation. Aptitude for complex and detailed work demonstrated. Current awareness of national trends and developments in cataloging, metadata standards, and information retrieval is required. Must be able to set priorities, multi-task, be self directed and motivated, and adapt to ever-changing needs.

And a job description for the reference positions:

The Geospatial Research Analyst performs reference interviews to determine customer cartographic needs. He/she works with government and commercial partners to acquire maps and charts. The map researcher works with catalogers and others to determine appropriate indexing and shelving methods. He/she shares responsibility for filing, maintaining, and ensuring access to more than one million cartographic materials in accordance with government standards and guidelines.

Additional responsibilities include identifying resources for cartographic materials, and networking with other government agencies for collection development; and utilizing GIS and geospatial software tools to assist customers with requests; maintaining the map library collection; shelving of library materials; and indexing for easier customer access. The Research Analyst trains customers on techniques for searching and ordering cartographic materials through the internal product request database.
