UNC Chapel Hill University Library

ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY

POSITION: North Caroliniana Cataloger

AVAILABLE: November 1, 2008

DESCRIPTION
The Technical Services Department of the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a motivated and collaborative individual to perform original and adaptive cataloging of materials in a wide range of formats, primarily held by the North Carolina Collection. Cataloging is performed using standard cataloging tools: AACR2, revised, LC subject headings, MARC21 formats, and OCLC. Materials also receive local subject headings and are classed using a modified Dewey Decimal Classification scheme. Cataloging duties include work on newly received materials from a range of eras, and retrospective conversion of older pamphlets, monographs, and serials. The North Carolina Collection is a full depository for North Carolina state publications, and the person in this position is the state documents specialist. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library participates in national programs, including NACO, BIBCO, CONSER, and SACO.

The cataloger will initially report to the Lead North Carolina Specialist Cataloger and will report to the Assistant Head of Special Collections Technical Services when that position is filled.

The North Carolina Collection is the largest and most comprehensive collection of library materials related to a single state. It holdings include more than 300,000 books, pamphlets, government documents, newspapers, periodicals, printed maps, and audiovisual materials. It holds more than 1.3 million photographic images and 15,000 artifacts. The Collection is widely known for its distinguished Thomas Wolfe and Sir Walter Raleigh collections. The North Carolina Collection is used by University undergraduate and graduate students and faculty and staff, students and faculty from other institutions, independent scholars, journalists, and the general public.
