SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY

Full-Time

SUMMARY: Under administrative supervision, this is highly responsible
professional library work, which involves administering a Resource
Center Branch Library. Performs related and other work as required.

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college;
attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science
from an ALA-accredited university; at least 3 years of full-time,
professional (position requiring MLS) experience including supervisory
experience.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Comprehensive knowledge of: (1) professional library
principles and practices; (2) public library functions, facilities, and
operations; (3) patron needs and library services to meet those needs;
(4) standard library automated system modules; (5) electronic and
printed materials, resources and databases.

Demonstrated ability to: (1) plan, organize and implement
complex operations and long-range projects; (2) establish and maintain
effective working relationships with administrators, department heads,
other employees and the public; (3) supervise, train, and evaluate
support staff; (4) communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to
groups and individuals; (5) be proficient on the computer with various
software.

GENERAL DUTIES

* Coordinates, directs, and supervises the work of the Broadmoor
branch.
* Supervises, evaluates, and trains four full-time department
heads (Reference, Circulation Children's and Genealogy Librarians) who
supervise twenty-one other full-time and part-time staff under the
direction of the Branch Manager.
* Schedules substitutes as needed; recommends staffing needs and
changes.
* May read reviews and offer suggestions to Collection Development
staff on selection of library materials.
* Works closely with branch staff in the development of programs
for the public. Advises the reference Librarian in development of
computer training programs for the public; advises the Children's
Librarian in planning and implementing programs such as Summer Reading
club and/or preschool programs.
* Instructs school classes in the use of library facilities and
standard reference tools; gives book talks and book reviews to school
classes and civic groups; conducts outreach programs for the community
if needed.
* Performs reference/readers' advisory and circulation duties as
required.
* Keeps up with the technological advances in the library field
and evaluates the furniture and equipment needs of the library.
* Keeps detailed records, with assistance from the three
department heads.
* Attends system-wide meetings/workshops, etc.
* Oversees facility management.
* Responds to after-hours security system callas at the library
branch.
* Performs other necessary duties as required.

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]

Monday - Friday: 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

Will work some Sundays on a rotational basis, serving as Branch
Supervisor.

THE LIBRARY

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library
systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile.
The library system has a combined holdings of over 665,000 items and
an annual budget which exceeds $10,500,000. Circulation for 2006 was
more than 1,236,000 (collect of 665,000+ items). The library has a
staff of 224 (72.5 FTE). The library implemented a new automated
system, SIRSI, in April 2003.

THE AREA

Shreveport (and sister city Bossier City) are two progressive cities
in Northwest Louisiana steeped in Southern style. Shreveport and
Bossier City are rich in attractions, festivals, cultural activities
and fine food. Shreveport-Bossier serves as the trade and cultural
center of the 200-mile radium extending into Arkansas, Louisiana and
Texas, known as the Ark-La-Tex. Some of the attractions include horse
racing from Louisiana Downs, one of the national's largest
thoroughbred racetracks, the American Rose Center, North America's
largest park dedicated to the rose, theater, ballet, opera, a
symphony, museums, outdoor recreation at local lakes and parks, five
dockside river boat casinos with entertainment districts on both sides
of the Red River, a variety of festivals year-round, and family
attractions including a Sci-Port Discovery Center and IMAX theater and
a water-park. With a low cost of living, Shreveport is a desirable
place to live.
