SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY

Full-Time

SUMMARY: Working closely with the Associate Director for Public
Services, this is highly responsible professional administrative
library work, which involves supervision of several major components
of the library system. Performs related and other work as required.

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an accredited university/college;
attainment of a graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science
from an ALA-accredited university; at least 4 years of increasingly
responsible, full-time professional (position requiring MLS)
experience including supervisory experience.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Comprehensive knowledge of: (1) professional library principles and
practices; (2) public library functions, facilities, and operations;
(3) patron needs and library services to meet those needs; (4)
standard library automated system modules.

Demonstrated ability to: (1) administer complex operations and
long-range projects; (2) establish and maintain effective working
relationships with administrators, department heads, trustees,
employees, organizations, city/parish departments, and the public; (3)
supervise, train, and evaluate professional and paraprofessional
staff; (4) communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups
and individuals; (5) be proficient on the computer with various software.

GENERAL DUTIES

* Serves as supervisor of the managers of the Main Library's
Public Service Departments (Reference/Readers' Advisory, Circulation,
and Special Collections), the North Caddo Branch Library, the North
Shreveport Branch Library, and nine part-time parish branch libraries
(Belcher, Blanchard, Gilliam, Higginbotham-Bryson, Hosston, Means,
Mooringsport, Oil City, and Rodessa) and any substitutes assigned to
those facilities.
* This employee will supervise, train and evaluate the managers of the
departments and branches listed above. Works with each manager
closely to solve problems and develop staff. Consults with the
Associate Director for Public Services concerning needs of each branch.
* Deals with policy interpretation and application;
investigates/resolves inquiries and/or complaints; assists supervisors
with handling of these and other matters.
* Collects numerical and statistical data and writes reports.
Conducts and /or oversees special projects such as the writing of
specifications for branch-wide service contracts, negotiation of
contracts, and communication with service providers concerning
problems or violations of contract. Assists Associate Director for
Public Services and other Regional Branch Coordinators with projects
affecting all branches and public service departments.
* Presents programs on branch libraries and/or public services to
civic and other groups; trains staff in new procedures as required.
* Responds to after-hours security system calls at the library
branch if necessary
* Performs other necessary duties as required.

Monday - Friday: 8:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

THE LIBRARY

Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest public library
systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one bookmobile.
The library system has a combined holdings of over 665,000 items and
an annual budget which exceeds $10,500,000. Circulation for 2006 was
more than 1,236,000 (collect of 665,000+ items). The library has a
staff of 224 (72.5 FTE). The library implemented a new automated
system, SIRSI, in April 2003.

THE AREA

Shreveport (and sister city Bossier City) are two progressive cities
in Northwest Louisiana steeped in Southern style. Shreveport and
Bossier City are rich in attractions, festivals, cultural activities
and fine food. Shreveport-Bossier serves as the trade and cultural
center of the 200-mile radium extending into Arkansas, Louisiana and
Texas, known as the Ark-La-Tex. Some of the attractions include horse
racing from Louisiana Downs, one of the national's largest
thoroughbred racetracks, the American Rose Center, North America's
largest park dedicated to the rose, theater, ballet, opera, a
symphony, museums, outdoor recreation at local lakes and parks, five
dockside river boat casinos with entertainment districts on both sides
of the Red River, a variety of festivals year-round, and family
attractions including a Sci-Port Discovery Center and IMAX theater and
a water-park. With a low cost of living, Shreveport is a desirable
place to live.
