Collections Management, at my library, and I am seeking to fill the
following position:
Metadata Coordinator
The Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library
seeks an innovative and energetic Metadata Coordinator. This individual
will be responsible for making decisions and recommendations regarding
the bibliographic treatment and handling of all Library materials,
including print and electronic monographs and serials, analyzing subject
matter of materials and assigning appropriate subject headings, creating
and updating item records in the Library's database and meeting client's
requests by performing rush cataloguing. This position reports to the
Associate Director for Collections Management.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Coordinates all cataloging activities for the Library's collections
and serves as resource person for all metadata creation and maintenance
2. Oversees monograph acquisitions activities for both print and
electronic formats
3. Oversees the work of copy catalogers and provides quality control for
cataloging, classification, and physical processing
4. Collects, maintains, and distributes statistics on technical services
activities (e.g., acquisitions, bindery, cataloging, withdrawals and
transfers, etc.)
5. Serves as chief authority control officer for the Library's
cataloging activities
6. Serves as the Library's representative on appropriate THSLC teams,
such as the Technical Services Standards Team and the Resources
Management Team
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills):
1. A graduate degree in Library or Information Science from a program
accredited by the American Library Association and a minimum of three
years of library experience
2. Minimum of three years experience of cataloging in a health sciences
library environment, with some experience of authority control and
revision of copy cataloging and processing desired; thorough knowledge
of NLM classification and MeSH required
3. Strong knowledge of bibliographic control standards
4. Excellent communications skills, both written and oral
5. Some knowledge of collection development (both print and electronic)
and the appropriate tools
