POSITION: Assistant Head of Technical Services and Head of Cataloging

DESCRIPTION
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an experienced, collaborative, and enthusiastic individual to manage the cataloging of rare and specialized published materials for the rich, diverse, and growing collections of the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library.
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections Technical Services, the Assistant Head of Technical Services and Head of Cataloging will have direct responsibility for the cataloging of rare and specialized published materials in the newly consolidated Technical Services Department. Responsibilities are chiefly managerial in nature, but the incumbent will be expected to participate in cataloging of collections as needed. Working with the Head of Technical Services, the Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging will set library-wide standards and priorities for special collections, and will work collaboratively with curatorial, public services, and conservation staff. The Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging will also work with the University Library's general collections technical services staff and with staff of the Carolina Digital Library and Archives to help develop, articulate, and maintain shared policies and metadata standards. The Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging is expected to help ensure that the Wilson Library adopts and contributes to the development of relevant standards; to be involved in professional discussions on technical services issues; and to be active in professional organizations concerned with cataloging and special collections issues.
The Special Collections Technical Services Department currently includes approximately 12 full-time staff, plus numerous graduate and undergraduate student assistants. The Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging would have managerial responsibility for the six staff engaged in cataloging rare and specialized published materials chiefly housed in the Rare Book Collection and the North Carolina Collection.
The Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library includes the North Carolina Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the Southern Historical Collection, the Southern Folklife Collection, and University Archives and Records Management Services. Together they hold extensive collections of books, rare books, pamphlets, government documents, newspapers, periodicals, maps, manuscripts, archives, photographs, audiovisual materials, and digital materials primarily documenting the University, North Carolina, and the American South. The Rare Book Collection has significant national and international literary and historical holdings, from clay tablets to medieval manuscripts to modern printings and artists' books.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited MLS and a minimum of three years of experience with cataloging special collections in an academic or research library setting, including a working knowledge of online library systems, AACR2r, LCRI, LCSH, DCRM, MARC21 formats, and authority control. Awareness of national and international trends in cataloging standards and bibliographic and authority control. Supervisory experience required. Ability to effectively supervise, train, and motivate cataloging staff. Reading knowledge of one or more European languages (Spanish especially desired). Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to set priorities and accomplish goals. Ability to work effectively in a large and diverse organization. Commitment to professional participation in areas relevant to the position. Excellent oral communication and writing skills. Commitment to a high level of service to faculty, staff, and students.
Preferred: Experience supervising professional and paraprofessional staff. Experience with NACO, BIBCO, or other PCC programs. Reading knowledge of one or more classical or non-European languages. Knowledge of standard descriptive bibliographies. Familiarity with Innovative's Millennium system. Familiarity with non-MARC metadata schema. Experience in developing and administering technical services grants.

The Latin American/Iberian Cataloger works in a collegial environment of cataloging specialists. Cataloging is done using OCLC’s Connexion Client and the library’s Innovative Interfaces local system. The position is in the Original/Adaptive Section of Resource Description & Management and reports to the head of the department. Catalogers at the UNC Libraries contribute national-level cataloging through NACO, BIBCO, and other PCC programs.

and public service announcements about NC LIVE events, activities and
accomplishments;
• Coordinate the development and implementation of effective public
information materials, including publicity for NC LIVE products and
services, events, and collaborations;
• Develop marketing communications and public information content for
the NC LIVE and member library websites;
• Establish, develop, and nurture partnerships with individuals, groups,
library support agencies, and organizations and businesses across the
state for the benefit of NC LIVE and its member institutions;
• Work with community groups on joint library/community projects and
activities;
• Direct and oversee production of statewide advertising and promotional
programs and activities for NC LIVE services and special events;
• Manage member library relations as a liaison and advocate on their
behalf to build relationships with content and service providers and
other partners;
• Track and identify trends in use and behavior to build training and
awareness initiatives;
• Facilitate NC LIVE advisory committees in order to better understand
organizational challenges and opportunities, and implement solutions
that work for NC LIVE and individual member libraries;
• Support ongoing NC LIVE activities through interaction with and
outreach to NC LIVE’s communities of interest.
Qualifications
Required:
• ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent advanced degree in Information
Science or related field.
• Education and/or experience in journalism, marketing, communications,
public relations or closely related field;
• Demonstrated ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and
communicate with colleagues and customers in ways that build confidence
and satisfaction with individual and organizational performance;
• Relevant customer service experience in a library, educational
institution, or other knowledge-based company;
• Willingness to travel to enable interaction with member libraries and
their users, as well as engage with people and organizations with
similar goals and objectives.
Preferred:
• Undergraduate degree in journalism, marketing, communications, public
relations or closely related field;
• Experience working in an academic or public library;
• Education and/or experience working with web-based library reference
sources and digital collections;
• Experience in nonprofit development and fundraising activities;

Salary is very competitive, commensurate with education and experience.

* Troubleshoots technology problems for patrons. Participates in on-call nights and weekends rotation for emergency technology support to the library. Participates as part of a team that supports a broad range of electronic products, services and hardware throughout the library.
* Participates in outreach, marketing, assessment and other library initiatives. Contributes cooperatively to library-wide initiatives. Participates in departmental, team and library-wide activities. Serves on library and University committees.

Education/Experience Bachelor's Degree required plus one year related experience. Experience managing digitization production required. Experience in instruction/teaching. Subject background in Sociology, Anthropology, or Economics. Interest in marketing library services. A minimum of one year of reference and library instruction experience in an academic library; internships, assistantships and practicums will be considered. Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods and statistical software
