Electronic Resources Cataloger

The Electronic Resources Cataloging Unit is one of three units within the newly created Electronic Resources Development Section of the Technical Services Division at the University of Michigan Library. This unit provides and maintains access via records in the local integrated library system (Aleph) and the SFX knowledge base to electronic journals and monographs, online databases, Web sites, and non-Web based remote electronic resources. Access is provided for titles in subscription packages, individually subscribed titles, and open access titles identified for addition to the collection by selectors. In collaboration with the Data Loads and Development Unit, the Electronic Resources Cataloging Unit works with vendors to acquire and load MARC record sets for electronic books and journals in online collections. As needed, the unit's staff members assist in resolving access and coverage problems associated with the Aleph and SFX records created for electronic resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Head of the Electronic Resources Cataloging Unit, the duties and responsibilities of this position are to:
* Independently catalog electronic resources in all subjects and in all Western European languages.
* Create or edit bibliographic records for all types of electronic resources according to nationally and locally established procedures.
* Assist in the maintenance required to ensure ongoing access to the library's cataloged electronic resources.
* Participate in batch loading records for collections of online journals and electronic books.
* Assist in training staff to catalog and maintain access to electronic resources.
* Contribute to reviewing, developing, and writing local procedures and documentation.
* Investigate and resolve problems referred to the unit.
* Participate in unit, division, and library-wide committees, task forces, projects, and other collaborative initiatives.

DESCRIPTION
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an experienced, collaborative, and enthusiastic individual to manage the cataloging of rare and specialized published materials for the rich, diverse, and growing collections of the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library.

Reporting to the Head of Special Collections Technical Services, the Assistant Head of Technical Services and Head of Cataloging will have direct responsibility for the cataloging of rare and specialized published materials in the newly consolidated Technical Services Department. Responsibilities are chiefly managerial in nature, but the incumbent will be expected to participate in cataloging of collections as needed. Working with the Head of Technical Services, the Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging will set library-wide standards and priorities for special collections, and will work collaboratively with curatorial, public services, and conservation staff. The Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging will also work with the University Library's general collections technical services staff and with staff of the Carolina Digital Library and Archives to help develop, articulate, and maintain shared policies and metadata standards. The Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging is expected to help ensure that the Wilson Library adopts and contributes to the development of relevant standards; to be involved in professional discussions on technical services issues; and to be active in professional organizations concerned with cataloging and special collections issues.

The Special Collections Technical Services Department currently includes approximately 12 full-time staff, plus numerous graduate and undergraduate student assistants. The Assistant Head/Head of Cataloging would have managerial responsibility for the six staff engaged in cataloging rare and specialized published materials chiefly housed in the Rare Book Collection and the North Carolina Collection.

The Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library includes the North Carolina Collection, the Rare Book Collection, the Southern Historical Collection, the Southern Folklife Collection, and University Archives and Records Management Services. Together they hold extensive collections of books, rare books, pamphlets, government documents, newspapers, periodicals, maps, manuscripts, archives, photographs, audiovisual materials, and digital materials primarily documenting the University, North Carolina, and the American South. The Rare Book Collection has significant national and international literary and historical holdings, from clay tablets to medieval manuscripts to modern printings and artists' books.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited MLS and a minimum of three years of experience with cataloging special collections in an academic or research library setting, including a working knowledge of online library systems, AACR2r, LCRI, LCSH, DCRM, MARC21 formats, and authority control. Awareness of national and international trends in cataloging standards and bibliographic and authority control. Supervisory experience required. Ability to effectively supervise, train, and motivate cataloging staff. Reading knowledge of one or more European languages (Spanish especially desired). Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to set priorities and accomplish goals. Ability to work effectively in a large and diverse organization. Commitment to professional participation in areas relevant to the position. Excellent oral communication and writing skills. Commitment to a high level of service to faculty, staff, and students.

librarians and seven support staff positions. The Head is expected to

Responsible for coordinating, planning, and providing library services
to children and teens up to age 18. Duties include staffing the
public service desk, providing outreach to schools and other
organizations serving children and teens, selecting age appropriate
print and AV material and planning programs.

Prior experience working with children and teens and knowledge of
current trends in service to the age group a plus. Masters degree in
Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution
required.

Colorado State University Libraries seek two flexible and adaptable science librarians who are committed to a digital library environment. The positions are 1) Science Liaison Librarian: Biological and Life Sciences and 2) Science Liaison Librarian: Agriculture. These positions are responsible for developing, implementing, and assessing effective subject-based instructional programs and research services for students, faculty, researchers, and administrators in their respective colleges and departments. The assignments include collection development and faculty liaison responsibilities with an emphasis on expanding access to digital resources; collaborating with academic faculty in the design of innovative library and classroom instruction; creating expanded programs for library services; and outreach activities to campus constituencies to promote research services, digital projects, institutional repositories, and grant activities.
